About Cloisonné: A History of Chinese Enamel Art
Cloisonné, known in China as Jingtai Blue (景泰蓝), is one of the country’s most celebrated traditional crafts. The technique first appeared during the Yuan Dynasty and matured in the Ming Dynasty, especially under the reign of Emperor Jingtai (1450–1457). During this period, artisans perfected the deep cobalt-blue enamel that later became the hallmark of the craft — which is why the technique came to be known as “Jingtai Blue.”
By the Qing Dynasty, cloisonné reached new artistic heights. Workshops in Beijing refined the use of copper filigree, complex enamel colors, and high-temperature firing methods, creating decorative objects prized by the imperial court. Over centuries, cloisonné has evolved into a symbol of Chinese artistry, blending metalwork, enamel painting, and kiln craftsmanship. Today, it is recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage and remains admired worldwide for its vivid colors, intricate patterns, and enduring beauty.
